Final Presentation Awards

April 29th, 2010 · No Comments · Uncategorized

And now the drumroll….here’s what you’ve been waiting for.  The imaginary Cornerstones Foundation has decided to award the following projects with funds to pursue actions plans related to literacy areas.

They are as follows:

Homelessness:  $73,810

Education: $50,475

New Media: $26,835

Families: $26,680

The rationales were varied for this distribution, however the main theme that came from students was that education and homelessness were significant issues that really needed to be funded.

Everyone did a good job of presenting background research, community data and ideas for the future.

Congratulations on your collective accomplishments!

Tomorrow in 203

April 28th, 2010 · No Comments · Uncategorized

Tomorrow, April 29th, we will hold our final class in the JC Cinema where each RING will present its findings and proposal for future action.  We are looking forward to seeing how everyone progressed this semester and what ideas are presented for future actions.

Here is the time frame for the day:

9:30-10:15 – Education RING (please be ready to go!)

10:15-11:00 – Homelessness RING

11:00-11:45 – Families RING

11:45-12:30 – New Media RING

12:30-1:30 – Pizza lunch (bring a cup for some water) and dessert, picture-taking time!

Each student will do peer evaluations of all the RINGS (unless presenting material).   You will also be given a scenario where you get to give out imaginary grant money to all or some of the projects.  We’ll take a tally at the end and let everyone know which project students believe should be funded!

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.  Get a good night’s sleep!

Guidelines for Praxis Part II

April 17th, 2010 · No Comments · Uncategorized

We’ve extracted from the Praxis assignment guidelines the following segment relating to Praxis Part II:

  • Praxis Phase 2
The final part of this assignment is to situate the two studies you reviewed in your own experience and explore all connections to the work you are conducting in your RING. Please discuss your own perspective about the relevance of the research you reviewed.
  • Possible areas for discussion may include:
    • which inquiry tradition is more aligned with your own beliefs about knowledge and how people come to know? (epistemology)
    • how do your own experiences shape your critique of the articles and how you might apply any results?
    • how might you step out of your preferred way of knowing and consider the question from alternative viewpoints?
    • how does your learning from this assignment inform the work you are doing in the RINGS?
    • what are possible practical applications of these articles?
    • briefly describe a follow-up study you would conduct based on one or both of these studies.

Remember to bring one hard copy of your completed draft to seminar on Tuesday, and include a cover sheet containing a paragraph or two explaining to your reviewers those areas on which you need/want specific feedback.

Just a reminder that we will start out tomorrow in Seminar – that’s where we’ll review for the quiz coming up on Thursday.  At 11:00 we’ll start RING time — where focus will be on how to share data and findings.

See you then!
